Another New Year! What happened to the old one? I’m sure many of you feel the same way. January 1st to January 1st seems to speed by with ever increasing velocity. Another year for us to hope we’re not just running in place. Henry David Thoreau made the observation that “it is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is what we are busy about”. Perhaps true wisdom is being able to know what to be busy about and what not to be busy about. Perhaps the “right things” to be busy about are those life pieces that bring joy and love and peace to others regardless of whether or not they bring joy and love and peace to us. The right things are others and not us. Perhaps it’s only when we make ourselves the object of life that depression and downers set in because, of course, that sort of joy and love and peace eventually run down even if the Energizer bunny is our sidekick. Maybe this year we need, as a result, to focus not on the love that we get, but on the love that we give. Maybe we need to be busy not about looking for other people to love us and fulfill our needs, but looking for people who need our love and whose needs we can fill. Maybe in 2022 our guiding principle should be the same as Jesus when He says, “I have come not to be served, but to serve”. Then when 2023 comes (and you know it’s just around the corner) we will really feel good about 2022.
